HEIC to JPG, WebP to JPG and which format to pick
JPG, PNG and WebP each do one job best. Pick by where the picture is going next.
HEIC to JPG
iPhones save photos as HEIC to save space, but plenty of websites, forms and Windows apps still won’t take them. As a JPG the photo opens anywhere, at the same size and with the same look. The first HEIC takes a moment longer while the reader loads, then it’s quick.
HEIC to PNG
Pick PNG when you plan to keep editing, like cropping, adding text or retouching. A PNG loses nothing each time it’s saved, so the picture stays exactly as it came off your phone. It’s a bigger file than a JPG, so switch to JPG once it’s finished and ready to send.
WebP to JPG
Pictures saved from websites often arrive as WebP, which some older apps and print shops can’t open. As a JPG it opens in any photo app, email or printer. If the picture has a see-through background, choose PNG instead, because JPG fills those parts with white.
PNG to JPG
Screenshots and design exports are usually PNGs, and they’re much heavier than a JPG of the same picture. Turn PNG into JPG and it fits under email limits and upload forms far more easily. Keep the PNG only when the background needs to stay see-through, or when it holds small text you want to stay crisp.
JPG to PNG
Some sites and design apps ask for PNG. Converting won’t make a JPG sharper, but it stops any further loss each time you save it again. Want the background gone as well? Remove Background cuts out the subject and leaves the rest see-through.
WebP for the smallest file
WebP looks like a JPG, keeps see-through backgrounds like a PNG and is usually smaller than both. Choose it for your own website or shop, where every second of loading counts. Safari can’t save WebP, so open the page in Chrome or Firefox for this one. Modern browsers and phones open WebP like any other photo, so visitors never notice the switch.
